Removal of Rock Walls at Readings Bay.

Tuesday 4 December 2018 5pm Council Chambers Byron Council Community Roundtable.

Action by Council and associated authorities to begin the process of removing the walls at the entrance of Readings Bay/Marshall’s Creek into the Brunswick River. As you know the vast majority of respondents to the 2018 Community Survey on Flooding requested the removal of these walls as the first measure to mitigate flooding in the greater Ocean Shores area. The walls have been raised in height and length over the years and block the entire 400 metre width of the bay’s entrance into the Brunswick River, except for a small 30 metre opening. This has the effect of forcing flood waters to return back across the entire Marshall’s Creek floodplain basin, including into Billinudgel, South Golden Beach, New Brighton and South Ocean Shores. It is only a matter of time before the next flood will cause the same devastation as experienced in March 2017. Could we please have a report on the survey’s results and the actions council will be taking to mitigate flooding caused by the walls.
